From AI-powered safety platforms to electric fleet innovation, companies across the student transportation industry are earning national recognition for reshaping how students get to school safely and sustainably.
Artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, electrification, and real-time safety technology are rapidly transforming the student transportation industry. What’s even better? National organizations are continuing to take notice.
Over the past month, several major school transportation companies and technology providers earned high-profile recognition for innovation, operational performance, and sustainability efforts, highlighting how quickly the sector is evolving to enhance the yellow bus.
First Student Named to TIME100 Most Influential Companies List
First Student recently announced it has been named to the TIME100 Most Influential Companies of 2026 under the Transportation category, which “honors organizations making an extraordinary impact in their industries.” The recognition specifically highlights the company’s leadership in transforming student transportation through its proprietary HALO technology platform, which integrates real-time data, AI, and predictive analytics.
With HALO, dispatching and routing intelligence, vehicle tracking, safety insights, preventive maintenance, and communication are all connected, unifying First Student's fleet of over 48,000 vehicles and supporting approximately 4.8 million student journeys each day. The platform is enhanced through a partnership with Samsara.
In pilot programs conducted across six locations, HALO-enabled safety technology delivered strong early results alongside improving workforce and operational performance, including:
- 81% reduction in inattentive driving events.
- 63% reduction in forward collision rates.
- 54% reduction in rolling stops.
- 115% increase in driver interview completion rates.
- 38% reduction in training time.
"Being named to the TIME100 Companies list is a meaningful recognition for First Student and reflects the impact we're making for millions of students and families every day," said John Kenning, CEO and president of First Student. "At First Student, caring for students is at the heart of everything we do. Our mission is to provide the best transportation experience, so students arrive ready to achieve their full potential, and this recognition reflects our team's commitment to living our values and delivering on that promise every day.”
Plus, Samsara Named to TIME100 Most Influential Companies
Speaking of Samsara, the software company announced it has also been named to the TIME100 Most Influential Companies of 2026 under the Manufacturing & Logistics category. Samsara’s position reflects the company’s role in “powering AI transformation in industries critical to the global economy.”
“It's an honor to be recognized by TIME100, but the heart of this inclusion is our impact with customers,” said Meagen Eisenberg, chief marketing officer at Samsara. “The frontline teams and operators we work with are the ones running the physical economy — moving goods, keeping the lights on, getting kids to school safely. We’re proud to build the technology that helps them do it better every day.”
One of the key reasonsSamara was recognized on TIME’s list was because of its impact on frontline worker safety. The company’s AI-powered safety tools have changed the way tens of thousands of organizations protect their teams:
- Fleets that deployed the complete Samsara AI safety solution, which detects hazards on the road and risky driving behaviors, saw an aggregated 73% reduction in accidents after 30 months.
- The company’s new innovation, Samsara Coach, analyzes real-time data to prioritize risk and help managers coach thousands of drivers simultaneously.
- Drivers benefit from start-of-the-day audio briefings, two-way audio coaching, and post-trip support by a personalized AI Avatar.
As for its partnership with First Student, Samsara’s AI Dash Cams helped reduce rolling stops, forward collisions, and inattentive driving behaviors.
“The Samsara cameras give our drivers an extra set of eyes,” said Sean McCormack, chief information officer at First Student. “Our whole mission is getting kids to and from school safely and happily — that’s why we exist. We use technology to enhance that.”

The Mobility House Announced as 2026 PLMA Award Finalist
The Mobility House announced on May 13 that it has been recognized as a finalist for the 2026 PLMA Awards of Excellence for The FIX Flexible Connection, a project designed to accelerate the deployment of electric vehicle fleets and charging infrastructure in New York.
The finalist recognition reflects The Mobility House’s work with Itron, supported by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, to demonstrate a flexible service connection approach that can help utilities and fleet operators move forward despite local distribution capacity constraints.
The FIX Flexible Connection integrates Itron’s IntelliFLEX distributed energy resource management system with the automated load management capabilities of The Mobility House’s ChargePilot charge management system. Together, these technologies are designed to manage charging dynamically based on grid conditions, helping fleets operate within site and distribution system limits while maintaining charging functionality for electric vehicles.
As a finalist for PLMA’s 2026 Awards of Excellence, the project is being recognized for its contribution to reliability, performance, and sustainability in energy systems. For The Mobility House, the recognition highlights the value of flexible charging and grid-integrated energy management in helping utilities, public agencies, and fleet operators address one of the most persistent barriers to electrification.
