ABB has been awarded a contract by EV infrastructure company Polara to provide e-mobility Compact Secondary Substation skid-mounted power distribution units for vehicle fleet charging projects in Canada and the United States.
Under the agreement, ABB will supply power distribution skids for Polara’s CHRGPK modular charging infrastructure system. The units will be available in multiple sizes based on fleet charging needs.
Each CHRGPK unit includes a compact secondary substation housing low- to medium-voltage switchgear up to 40.5 kV, transformers, and low-voltage switchboards with protection devices.
Modular Design Intended to Simplify Installation
ABB and Polara said the modular skid design is intended to reduce engineering time and installation complexity while improving safety.
The pre-engineered systems are assembled and tested at the factory before deployment and are designed for use in public environments.
“ABB’s extensive experience with grid applications and proven engineering are some of the reasons that we elected to work with them to create a cost-effective solution that meets our customer’s needs,” said Sébastien Fournier, CEO of Polara.
Brandon Spencer, president of ABB Energy Industries, said the project supports the broader transition to electric transportation infrastructure in North America.

ABB’s compact secondary substation unit is designed to streamline power distribution for large-scale EV fleet charging projects across Canada and the U.S.

School Bus Electrification Part of Broader Investment Efforts
The partnership comes as Canada and the United States continue investing in public transit and vehicle electrification infrastructure.
ABB noted that Québec’s 2030 Plan for a Green Economy includes goals to electrify up to 65% of the province’s existing school bus fleet and requires all new school buses sold in the province to be electric.
According to the plan, school bus electrification is part of Québec’s broader effort to reduce transportation-sector emissions by 2030.
