California Student Struck by Waymo

In late January, a student was injured by a Waymo vehicle in Santa Monica near Grant Elementary School. Waymo stated that the child "suddenly entered the roadway" from behind an SUV, in front of the self-driving car's path. The company claims its vehicle still braked faster than a human driver would have been able to.

The same city's residents have already called Waymo a "nuisance" for an unrelated concern. According to Fox 11, the city filed court papers in December, criticizing the company's overnight charging stations. Santa Monica for Renters Rights joined opposition, as residents called it a "circus" for its noise disruptions. In response, Teamsters are calling on the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to indefinitely suspend Waymo's license to operate in California.

Attorney Warns Autonomous Vehicles Are "Out of Control"

“If a human driver broke the law 20 times around school buses, their license would be suspended immediately,” Witherite said. “Waymo’s response was simply: ‘We’re not stopping.’ That is not accountability. That is a corporation telling a school district to live with the danger.”
