School bus driver, student killed in bus-train collision
A bus driver in Larimore, North Dakota, was returning students home on Monday after school when he struck a train. He failed to yield to a stop sign, officials say. A 17-year-old girl was also killed and 12 students were injured.
LARIMORE, N.D. — On Monday, a school bus returning students home after school struck a train, killing the bus driver, Max Danner, and a 17-year-old girl, Grand Forks Herald reports.
About a dozen other students aboard the bus also suffered injuries, and were taken to hospitals across the region, according to the newspaper. On Tuesday, the North Dakota Highway Patrol said in a news release the crash injured 12 students, Grand Forks Herald reports.
The bus was traveling northbound on a gravel road at about 3:40 p.m. when it failed to yield to a stop sign and struck the westbound BNSF Railway train, ejecting several children from the bus, Lt. Troy Hischer of the Highway Patrol told the newspaper.
Larimore Public Schools officials arrived at the scene and worked to locate all of the children’s parents, according to Grand Forks Herald. School board members gathered with administration at Larimore Junior-Senior High School to meet with parents, and counselors were made available for students, the newspaper reports.
