2 school districts among winners of Green Fleet Award
Houston Independent School District in Texas and Lower Merion School District in Pennsylvania are honored for use of alternative fuels and other green initiatives.
Lower Merion School District in Pennsylvania came in at No. 46 on the Green Fleet Award list. The district runs 61 CNG buses.
Two school districts from Texas and Pennsylvania were among the 50 winners of this year’s Green Fleet Award.
Officials said that the award is based on a comprehensive set of criteria that includes fleet composition, fuel and emissions, policy and planning, and fleet utilization.
Houston Independent School District came in at No. 17 on the list of Green Fleet Award winners. The district has acquired dozens of propane school buses in recent years and, in 2010, began using biodiesel fuel in all of its diesel buses and light-fleet vehicles.
Lower Merion School District in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, came in at No. 46 on the Green Fleet Award list. Lower Merion was reportedly the first school district in Pennsylvania to add buses fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG) to its fleet, in 1995. The district's fleet of 114 vehicles now includes 61 CNG buses.
The 2014 Green Fleet Award winners were announced at the North American Green Fleet Forum in Sacramento, California, Oct. 15-16. To view the full list of honorees, go here.
