Company helps Calif. district ‘green’ fleet with biodiesel

Buster Biofuels partners with Legoland California, the San Diego Padres and other entities to collect their grease and oil, recycling it into biodiesel to power San Dieguito Union High School District buses. The district is currently powering two buses with a B20 biodiesel blend and plans to eventually run its entire fleet on the fuel.

Ariz. district expects big savings in jump to propane

Mesa Public Schools, which has the largest school bus fleet in the state, purchases 27 propane-powered Blue Bird and Micro Bird models. Transportation chief Ron Latko tells SBF that he estimates the district will save more than $105,000 in fuel costs this year with the propane buses.

EPA awards $1.3M in Missouri, Kansas for clean buses

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources receives $999,460 for its “Clean Up Missouri” Project to replace, retrofit and repower school buses throughout the state, while the Kansas Department of Health & Environment receives $343,450 for similar efforts. The money will go toward 196 school buses in Missouri and 59 buses in Kansas.

Calif. agency adds $10K to vouchers for hybrid buses

Thomas Built’s Saf-T-Liner C2e hybrid school bus and IC Bus’ CE Series bus with a hybrid-electric system are eligible for the funding as part of the California Air Resources Board's Hybrid Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project. Joe Calavita, air pollution specialist for the agency, tells SBF that previously, most buses were eligible for $20,000 each, and now pupil transporters can get $30,000, plus $5,000 for the first bus purchased.
