KUNA, Idaho — An investigation of last month's fatal school bus crash near Kuna has found that the school bus driver was at fault, according to a report filed with the Idaho Transportation Department.
A State Police spokesperson told the Idaho Statesman that investigators believe that bus driver Debra Boatwright stopped at a stop sign and then pulled into the path of an approaching dump truck.
One student was killed and four others were injured in the collision of the bus and the truck, which occurred on Dec. 5 around 8 a.m. at a rural intersection near Kuna. At that intersection, there is a two-way stop for vehicles on the road that the school bus was traveling on.
The school bus was transporting 10 children to an elementary school when the accident happened. One student succumbed to injuries at the scene. The four other children who were injured were transported to area hospitals.
KBOI reported on Thursday that no charges have been filed at this point. The Kuna School District released a statement saying that the school bus driver is on leave "pending the completed investigation."
"The Kuna School District is devastated by the loss of student Daniel Cook, and our deepest sympathies go out to the Cook family," the statement said. "The district continues to be concerned for students injured or impacted by the accident, for the bus driver, and [for] their families."
