A North Carolina high school student was struck and killed by a pickup truck Tuesday morning, November 3, while attempting to board her school bus in Nash County.

According to WRAL, the crash occurred around 6:03 a.m. on Bryant Road, south of Middlesex, as a Southern Nash High School student was waiting in her driveway for the bus.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the bus had stopped in front of the student's home with its amber warning lights flashing. However, the bus's red lights and stop arm had not yet been activated when the student entered the roadway and was struck by an approaching Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

The student was thrown into a ditch and transported to a hospital, where she died shortly after 8 a.m.

Authorities said the pickup driver stopped following the collision. Investigators determined that the student's actions contributed to the crash and do not expect charges to be filed against the driver. Impairment is not suspected.

The student's identity has not been released. Nash County Public Schools asked the community to respect the family's privacy and deployed its Traumatic Event Debriefing Team to Southern Nash High School to provide grief support for students and staff, according to ABC11.

The incident underscores the importance of school bus loading and unloading safety, particularly when students must cross a roadway to board. Even so, all drivers on the road should stay vigilant when traveling near school buses and watch for students near the roadway.

Two Killed in Separate Utah School Bus Crash

Also on Nov. 3, two people were killed in a collision involving a school bus on Beryl Highway in Iron County, Utah, near Cedar City.

According to ABC4, a sedan struck the school bus at an intersection, causing it to roll over. The two occupants of the sedan, identified as Shaun Martin Holt, 37, and Daya Rae MacBride, 36, died in the crash.

No students were aboard the bus, which had completed its morning drop-off route for Escalante Valley Elementary School. The school bus driver and an aide were transported to the hospital for treatment.

The Iron County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate the crash. According to the school district, this was the third crash involving one of its school buses in 2026 and the second fatal incident.
