HAAS Alert’s Safety Cloud Warns Motorists of Stopped School Buses

Through a transponder or Samsara connection, the product lets school bus fleets send advance warnings to approaching drivers through in-vehicle alerts.

HAAS Alert’s Safety Cloud service is now available for school bus fleets.

How Does the HAAS Alert Safety Cloud Work?

With the installation of the HAAS Alert transponder or remote activation via Samsara-equipped fleets, school buses automatically send in-vehicle alerts to oncoming drivers when they are approaching a stopped school bus. These alerts reach drivers 30 seconds before they reach the bus stop, giving them time to slow down, pay attention, and ultimately come to a safe stop and avoiding unintentional illegal passing.

When students are boarding and exiting the bus, Safety Cloud automatically begins broadcasting alerts to oncoming drivers in their vehicle via navigation apps (currently, the company integrates with Waze) or existing connectivity (a la Samsara).

How School Buses Can Use Safety Cloud

The company says its transponder is a low-cost HA-7 device that can be installed in under 30 minutes with a three-wire installation and no additional data plan. It synchronizes with the stop-arm or other trigger to send alerts to other drivers.

Samsara customers can activate directly through their Samsara service without any hardware needed. No manual intervention is needed by drivers; the system works in the background and provides monthly reporting on drivers alerted.

Safety Cloud has been proven to reduce stop arm violations by as much as 47%, according to the company.

Drivers slow by 5 mph within seconds of receiving a ‘stopped school bus ahead’ alert. This kind of digital alerting is an industry best practice for road safety and named as a congressional National Priority Safety Program, defined in National Fire Protection Association standards, recommended by the National Transportation Safety Board, and part of the European NCAP standard.

HAAS Alert is a road safety company that works with thousands of fleets nationwide spanning first responders, roadside workers, and state transportation departments.
