New York Transportation Provider Plans Diesel-to-Electric Repower
Total Transportation Corp. is working with Unique Electric Solutions (UES) to convert six diesel buses to battery electric.

Transportation services provider Total Transportation Corp will convert six school buses from diesel to electric using the Unique Electric Solutions (UES) battery-electric repower system. The buses will operate in New York City for the Department of Education.
Through repowering, existing in-service gas- or diesel-powered vehicles are converted – or retrofitted – to clean battery electric, offering zero tailpipe emissions, quiet operation, and dramatic reduction in operating costs, without the cost of a new vehicle.
“Converting our existing buses to electric via (UES) repower allows us achieve our fleet electrification goals more quickly,” said Augie Vona, CEO of Total Transportation, which operates in three states, including New York, where Gov. Kathy Hochul wants all zero-emission buses by 2035.
The all-electric UES repower is designed for school buses from Type A to Type D. Using a high-torque electric motor and modular battery packs, a variety of range requirements can be met at various price points. The system is available with various HVAC options, and is compatible with all school bus ADA equipment, including wheelchair lifts.
