ALBANY, N.Y. — In response to a handful of recent fatal crashes, the National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT) is developing a campaign to eliminate school transportation-related fatalities by 2025: “Zip. Zero. Nada. None.”

In a newsletter sent to its members on Tuesday, NAPT said that although the industry has a strong safety culture and impressive safety record, its board members are taking another look at various aspects of school transportation safety.

“The NAPT board believes we can and must do better, sharing the view of other transportation safety leaders that crashes, and fatalities, are almost always preventable,” NAPT added in the newsletter.

NAPT board members will work with the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS) and the National School Transportation Association (NSTA) to finalize details of the campaign.

To accomplish the campaign’s goal of zero school transportation fatalities by 2025, NAPT is encouraging members across the U.S. to “double down on more than a half century of operational experience” and focus on five factors:

•    School buses
•    School bus drivers
•    Sharing the road with school buses
•    School transportation leadership
•    Information for the public

More campaign details will be shared with NAPT members on the factors listed above in the coming weeks, according to the newsletter.
