O’FALLON, Mo. — A school bus here crashed into a ditch, injuring the driver and five students on Wednesday, the first day of school in the area, police said.

At 7:01 a.m., St. Charles County Police Department officers responded to reports of the incident, according to the police department’s Facebook page. The bus was traveling northeast when it ran off the side of the road and struck a tree, coming to rest in a ditch and stopping on its side.

The driver and two students were taken to the hospital, including one student who was extricated from the vehicle, police said. Their injuries are reportedly not life threatening. Three other students were treated at the scene and released. Approximately 30 students were aboard the bus, police said on the department’s Facebook page.

Three of the middle school students aboard the bus who weren’t injured told KSDK that the bus ride started out normally, but then the bus began shaking. The bus “was on a turn and the road was wet,” one of the students aboard told the news source. One student told KSDK that he crawled out of a window, and students said that most of them were able to exit the bus on their own.

Fort Zumwalt School District officials told the news source that the bus slid on a slick blacktop. The accident is still under investigation, police said.
