GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The vice chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will be among the featured speakers at the upcoming pupil transportation conferences here.

NTSB’s Christopher Hart is expected to discuss recent crash investigation results and recommendations in a joint session of the National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT) and the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS).

Also during the joint session, attendees will watch the film “Impact: After the Crash,” which reenacts the catastrophic 1988 bus crash in Carrollton, Ky., and shares inspirational stories of survivors.

Victoria Arlen will be another featured speaker during the NAPT Summit. A rare virus sidelined Arlen when she was 11, leaving her partially paralyzed but determined to succeed. Now a member of the U.S. Paralympic swimming team, she has earned a gold medal, three silvers and a world record in the women’s 200 freestyle.

Also on the NAPT speaker lineup are NFL ref John Parry and former superintendent John Barry. Among other Summit offerings are a host of workshops, the annual trade show, key performance indicator (KPI) “boot camp,” and a safety and security special event.

Topics on the agenda for the NASDPTS conference include maximizing efficiency through bell time changes; marijuana legalization and the possible impact on school bus drivers; the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act; and new "smart" technologies and how they might impact the industry.
