Student absenteeism spikes after cut to bus service

An official at Union County Public Schools in Maynardville, Tenn., reports that 18% of students were absent on Tuesday, up from the usual 5.5%. The district suspended transportation for the last eight days of school to offset a budget shortfall of about $200,000.

Tenn. district cuts bus service for 8 days

Union County Public Schools in Maynardville stops the service for all students except those with special needs and those in pre-kindergarten due to an approximately $200,000 budget shortfall. Parents are reportedly sent a letter saying that students who don't attend the last week of school will be considered absent, but parents facing a "transportation hardship" can appeal their children’s absences.

Bus service changes could yield $500K in savings

After modified transportation standards for the upcoming school year are proposed to the school board, Seattle Public Schools’ transportation team continues to research cost-savings options and will submit a new proposal on May 16. Officials say it calls for a return to the 2011-12 transportation plan, which, in addition to projected savings, has a minimal impact on bell times.

Ga., Ind. districts pioneer use of propane school buses

Hall County Schools in Gainesville, Ga., which runs 20 Blue Bird Propane-Powered Vision school buses, is recognized by state legislators and dignitaries as the state’s first school district to power buses with the alternative fuel. Tippecanoe School Corp. in Lafayette, Ind., will reportedly deploy the state’s first Propane-Powered Vision units prior to summer break. Officials say both districts are seeing savings in fuel costs from the buses.
