Driver honored for saving 40 children from bus fire

Last week, the Wisconsin School Bus Association named Steve Linehan Wisconsin School Bus Driver of the Year and presented him with a plaque at a luncheon. Linehan was driving the students to an elementary school, stopped the bus when he smelled smoke, and evacuated the children as flames spread. There were only very minor injuries.

Three adults arrested in school bus theft

The adults, along with two juveniles, allegedly took the school activity bus from the Richlands (Va.) High School campus and drove it onto the athletic field of Southwest Virginia Community College. Officials are looking into how one of the adults apparently obtained the keys used to operate the bus.

President Obama nominates Hart to serve a two-year term as chairman of the federal accident investigation agency. Hart, who has spoken about school bus crash investigations at industry events, would succeed Deborah Hart, who resigned in April.

School bus company closes after 58 years

The Douglas family, which ran Douglas Transportation Inc. for three generations, signed a pact with Oregon-based Western States Bus Services Inc., selling all 12 of its buses and its contract with the school district. School budget cuts had lowered profit margins for the company.

Funding from investors comes as the second Motiv Power Systems-equipped Trans Tech all-electric school bus is delivered to Kings Canyon Unified School District in Reedley, California. $378K allotted for busing district’s rural students

Stop-arm cameras reducing passing violations, study shows

According to a new analysis of American Traffic Solutions’ CrossingGuard School Bus Safety Camera programs in operation, the number of violations on bus routes where a significant stop-arm running problem is identified falls by more than 15% during the school year. The analysis also finds that less than 1% of drivers who receive one ticket get a second citation.

Now available nationwide, the new solution makes the school bus a classroom on wheels. It uses wireless technology, AT&T’s 4G LTE network and devices to extend Internet connectivity on buses, offers real-time streaming video and broadcast speakers, and allows remote monitoring of driver and student behavior to limit the potential for accidents and bullying, company officials said.

Wisconsin contractors add 57 propane buses

Lamers Bus Lines added 41 new Blue Bird Propane Vision school buses, expanding the number of propane buses in its fleet to 59 units. Meanwhile, Badger Bus will receive 16 new Blue Bird Propane Vision buses, expanding its total propane-powered buses to 20 units.
