NORWICH, N.Y. — A school bus driver here is being hailed a hero after her quick thinking saved a student from getting hit by a vehicle that illegally passed the bus.
The incident, which took place on April 26, was captured on a video surveillance camera on the Norwich City School District bus. The footage shows the driver, Samantha Call, grabbing the student by his jacket as a vehicle speeds past the stopped school bus.
Norwich City School District posted the video on its Facebook page and included a message saying that Call, who has been a driver with the district for six years, “prevented an almost-certain tragedy,” and that the incident shows “exactly why you should NEVER pass a school bus when the stop arm is out and the red lights are flashing.”
The district also included in the post a statement from William Loomis, the transportation supervisor for Norwich City School District. Loomis said, according to the district, that Call did an “outstanding job,” and that all of the district’s drivers undergo training to prepare for situations like this. He also said he hopes the video will help others realize the dangers of passing a stopped school bus.
