ALTOONA, Pa. — A labor group gave Student Transportation of America (STA) high marks in its privatization of the local school district’s bus service.
Local 2952 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees said in a recent newsletter that it “feared the worst” when the Altoona Area School District announced the privatization plan last summer.
But Keith Engelbert of STA said that the company worked “extremely hard” with the union, and the union’s members ultimately approved the five-year contract with STA in a 39-to-2 vote.
The contract preserved the union members’ jobs, provided the same base pay plus annual increases and retained nearly all benefits. Additionally, the members will receive a new longevity pay benefit.
“It’s a major accomplishment,” said union staff representative Ted Manna.
