OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. — Three students and a recent high school graduate were arrested last week on charges of malicious mischief for vandalism to 45 school buses. The buses’ tires were flattened last weekend.
The buses are kept at the school district’s bus garage. Police believe the four teens bought valve-stem removers from a local store last Sunday night and used them to deflate the tires, the SunHerald reports.
“They violated a whole series of statutes, including the rare violation of disturbing a whole school session,” schools Superintendent Robert Hirsch told the newspaper. “The biggest problem was hundreds of kids waiting an hour or two, especially kindergarten and first, second and third grades.”
Bus drivers had clocked in but had to wait a couple of hours before they could run their routes. This will reportedly cost the district about $2,000 in additional pay. Moreover, the district hired two companies to air up the tires, which cost another estimated $2,000.
The four teens were charged with a misdemeanor. The maximum penalty is a year in jail, a $1,000 fine and restitution, according to the SunHerald.
