AlphaRoute, an AI-powered transportation optimization platform, announced that Leander Independent School District (Leander ISD) identified more than $1 million in projected annual savings after optimizing its school bus routing operations.
The initiative focused on improving efficiency while maintaining consistent service for students and families, as districts continue to face driver shortages and rising transportation costs.
Routing Optimization Results
At the start of the project, Leander ISD operated 173 routes with 150 available drivers. District leaders sought to reduce route demand without changing school bell times or stop locations.
Within four weeks, AlphaRoute developed a routing solution that the district’s routing team expects will reduce the route count by 21 buses, aligning operations more closely with available staffing while maintaining service levels.
The full solution will be implemented for the 2026-27 school year. Less than a month after receiving the plan, the district began making adjustments expected to generate savings during the current school year.
“For the first time, we were asked why we do what we do, not just what we do,” said Toni Tichi of Leander ISD. “That shift helped us uncover opportunities we hadn’t previously considered.”
Data-Driven Approach
AlphaRoute’s platform uses optimization algorithms and scenario modeling to evaluate routing options. The process combines data analysis with district input to develop operationally practical solutions.
Key outcomes from the project include:
- 21 fewer required bus routes
- More than $1 million in projected annual savings
- No changes to bell times or stop locations
- Improved alignment between routes and available drivers
The district also gained access to planning tools and scenario data to support future transportation decisions.
“Many districts have strong operational foundations but limited time and tools to explore alternatives at scale,” said an AlphaRoute executive. “This work shows how a structured, data-driven approach can help districts identify practical opportunities while maintaining service.”
Addressing Ongoing Transportation Challenges
School transportation departments continue to face constraints related to staffing, budgets, and operational complexity.
Route optimization can help districts better use existing resources without requiring significant service changes.
Approaches like this can help districts:
- Improve fleet and driver utilization
- Maintain service quality for students and families
- Offset budget pressures
- Address driver shortages
- Support future planning
- Evaluate policy and operational scenarios before implementationalo
By focusing on efficiency and feasibility, districts can make operational improvements that support both service and cost goals.
