HOUSTON — A high school student was in stable condition on Thursday after he was shot in the abdomen at a school bus stop, police said.
The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon in a neighborhood in southwest Houston. According to posts on Twitter from the Houston Police Department, preliminary information indicated that the shooting of the 18-year-old was the result of a fight at the bus stop.
Detective Justin Russell told KPRC that "there was an argument between a couple of people that had been started a few days ago [and] came to a head today."
Police said on Twitter that the teen was transported to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
According to the Houston Police Department, the suspects fled the scene of the shooting in a silver vehicle. The incident was still under investigation.
KHOU reported that when the shooting occurred, students returned to the school bus and the driver left the scene and called authorities.
Fort Bend Independent School District told local media that the 18-year-old who was shot is a student at Willowridge High School. There were also middle school students who had gotten off the bus at the stop. Police noted on Twitter that no juveniles were injured by gunfire.
