Suspect arrested in hit-and-run near bus stop
A 6-year-old boy and his older sister were crossing a street to get to their school bus stop when a motorist struck both of them and fled the scene. The boy died at the hospital. Police identified the driver of the vehicle and arrested him several hours after the incident.
NEW ORLEANS — A 6-year-old boy was killed and a suspect was later arrested in a hit-and-run near a school bus stop here on Monday.
The boy, his 9-year-old sister and two other children were crossing a street in the crosswalk on their way to the bus stop around 7 a.m. when the driver of a gray Honda Crosstour struck the siblings and fled the scene.
The boy died at the hospital; his sister had non-life threatening injuries. The other two children were not struck or injured in the incident.
New Orleans police officers located the vehicle and identified the driver as Arthur Toledano, 22. Around 12:30 p.m., Toledano was arrested at his home and booked on charges of manslaughter, attempted manslaughter, hit-and-run and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.
Toledano was previously arrested for traffic violations and warrants.
“We are extremely saddened by the loss of this young life, but I’m extremely happy that our traffic investigators acted very swiftly with the evidence they received in making this arrest,” said Ronal Serpas, superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department.
The incident remains under investigation.
