Student Struck by Car, Injured While Trying to Board School Bus
A 14-year old girl in New Jersey was seriously injured after being hit by a car while crossing a highway to board her bus. The bus was stopped with its stop arm extended and red lights activated, police say.
UPPER TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A 14-year-old girl here was seriously injured after being struck by a car while crossing a highway to board her school bus on Tuesday, state police said.
At 7:17 a.m., police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a car at the intersection of U.S. Route 9 and Ocean Avenue, according to a news release from New Jersey State Police. Based on the preliminary investigation, a school bus was stopped in the northbound lane with its stop arm extended and flashing red lights activated. A 17-year-old motorist was driving southbound on U.S. 9 when he failed to stop in time and struck the girl, who was legally crossing the road from the direction of West Ocean Avenue.
The girl was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The motorist and a passenger in the car were not injured.
The crash is still under investigation. No summonses or criminal charges have been issued at this time.
