DOWNINGTON, Pa. — The local school district is mourning the loss of one of its students, who succumbed to injuries from an accident last week in which he was struck by a school bus.

The 6-year-old, a first-grader at Pickering Valley Elementary School, passed away on Tuesday. He had been hospitalized since the June 16 accident.

"The entire district is grieving with the family," said Dr. Lawrence Mussoline, superintendent of the Downingtown Area School District. "We are a large district, but we care deeply about each one of our students. This is a very tragic day for all of us."

Counselors were made available at the elementary school on Thursday.

Local police told the media last week that it appeared that the boy darted in front of the bus at 3:50 p.m. near his home. Other details about the accident, including the name of the student, will not be released until the investigation is completed, police said.

A school district statement said that the student was medivac'd to a children's hospital in Delaware. Police and emergency personnel also cared for the children on the bus until their parents arrived. Mussoline and the district's administrative team were also on the scene.
