JACKSONVILLE, Texas — A student here was recognized on Tuesday for her quick thinking and willingness to help others after her school bus driver experienced a medical emergency that caused the bus to crash, KETK reports.
In October, Olivia Boggs, a seventh grade student at Jacksonville Middle School, was riding the bus, headed to school, when the bus driver started to veer off of the road, according to the news source. Officials from Jacksonville Independent School District told KETK that the bus driver had experienced a medical emergency, causing him to hit a nearby guardrail.
Boggs told the news source that students were screaming on the bus and were trying to understand what was happening at the time. However, Boggs told KETK that she sprang into action to ensure everyone on the bus was calm and safe.
On Tuesday, members of the Jacksonville City Council and Jacksonville Fire Department honored Boggs for her heroic actions, according to the news source. She told KETK that she didn’t think she would be recognized, since at the time, her main priority was ensuring the “the safety of children, my classmates, [and] older teenagers.”
