POLSON, Mont. — A high school student here was honored on Monday for taking quick action to assist others after his school bus was involved in an accident in May, Missoulian reports.

After a drunken driver crashed into the rear of his school bus on May 11, Shayne Pierre, a 15-year-old student, who had been sleeping, woke up to find the other 10 students aboard the bus screaming, assisted the driver of the other vehicle, who was injured, then returned to the bus to get the students to exit because he had noticed gasoline leaking from the vehicles, according to the newspaper. Pierre suffered whiplash in the crash and was one of three students taken to the hospital with minor injuries. 

On Monday, Pierre was presented with an award from the Montana Highway Patrol — one that usually recognizes troopers — and a certificate of commendation from Lake County, Missoulian reports. A trooper for the highway patrol said Pierre “displayed a high level of maturity and calm” after the collision, according to the newspaper.

Pierre said he doesn’t think of himself as a hero; he “saw the situation and acted without thinking,” and said that his parents “always taught me to help others and do the right thing,” Missoulian reports.
