Sisters save students from burning bus

As Bettye Windom and Beth Insley were driving home on the evening of April 30, they spotted a school bus with smoke coming out of the front of it and were able to help about 20 Port Gibson (Miss.) High School students get out right before the bus caught fire.

GEORGETOWN, Miss. — The Associated Press (AP) reports that sisters Bettye Windom and Beth Insley saved about 20 Port Gibson High School students from a bus that was about to catch fire.

Windom told the AP that on the evening of April 30, she and her sister were driving home when she saw a school bus with smoke coming out of the front of it. She flashed her car's headlights and Insley leaned out the window and yelled, “Stop the bus!”

According to the AP, when the bus didn’t stop, Windom called 911 and pulled alongside the bus while her sister kept waving and shouting. Since that didn’t work, she pulled in front of the bus and slammed on the brakes. She saw sparks coming from the bus. The women left the car and shouted for everyone to get off the bus. As soon as everyone left the bus, it burst into flames, Windom told the AP.

Windom also said that the school system plans to give her and her sister an award, but she “doesn’t think they did anything heroic,” and they are just glad that everyone was able to get off the bus safely.
