JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting into a school bus that occurred here on Thursday, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
Shortly after 4 p.m., reports were confirmed of shots having been fired into a school bus full of students being transported home from school.
An investigation into the incident revealed a lone shooter is responsible for shooting into the school bus as it approached the intersection, according to the sheriff’s office. Two 16-year-old girls were struck while riding the bus and were transported to hospitals with what have been described as non-life threatening injuries.
The suspect has been identified as Edgar Robles, 16, and the search continues for the suspect, according to the news release from the sheriff's office.
Police have obtained a warrant for Robles' arrest, News4Jaxreports.
Robles is accused of firing five shots into a school bus Thursday afternoon, and has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of firing deadly missiles, according to the news source. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office told the news source Robles should be considered armed and dangerous.
Tom Hackney, the director of the sheriff’s office, told News4Jax the shooting appeared to be in retaliation for a fatal crash that happened within the past year and that Robles was trying to shoot specific boys on the bus.
Hackney added that as the bus stopped, Robles allegedly began yelling at students inside the bus to get off the bus. An unknown person who was inside the bus spit out of the window and hit Robles, and at that point Robles reportedly pulled his gun. The school bus driver saw Robles and the gun in his hand, and drove the bus away as Robles started shooting.
Duval County School Board police were assigned on Friday to follow all school buses traveling to and from Grand Park Center, Mattie V. Rutherford Alternative Education Center and James Weldon Johnson Academic Career Training Center. Extra officers and grief counselors were also at the schools on Friday.
