UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Union County Public Schools bus driver Timothy Jerome McManus was killed in a collision with a garbage truck on Monday here and the driver of the truck has been charged in connection to the incident, WBTV reports. No children were on board the bus at the time of the accident.
The collision occurred around 3 p.m. as McManus was on his way to Central Academy of Technology and Arts to pick up students. Investigators told the news outlet that the driver of the dump truck crossed the center line while going around a curve and hit the bus head-on. McManus was pronounced dead at the scene. State troopers told WBTV McManus was wearing a seat belt, but the impact still threw him from the bus.
The driver of the garbage truck, Joshua Teague, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to WSOCTV. The Highway Patrol told WSOCTV Teague was reaching for something on the floor, became distracted and crashed into the school bus, and is being charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.
McManus had worked for the school district for three years, according to WBTV. A fund through gofundme has been set up to help McManus' family.
