BLAINE, Minn. — A school bus driver here was criminally charged after he admitted to intentionally driving too fast over a hump in the road, injuring several students aboard the bus, KSTP reports.
The criminal complaint states that on April 8, Trevor Aaron McDonald was driving students home from school when he hit a large hump in the road, driving about 26 to 27 miles per hour, according to the news source. Police told KSTP that several students were ejected from their seats and hit the ceiling of the bus. The criminal complaint states that many of the students had blunt force trauma and cuts from the incident, according to the news source.
Video footage and audio from the bus shows that McDonald had discussed driving too fast over the hump with one of the students. The complaint also states that the student told McDonald that students might get hurt if he did that, KSTP reports. McDonald told police that he intentionally drove over the hump faster than he normally would, which would be about 3 to 5 miles per hour. Police told the news source that the bus bottomed out after driving over the hump, causing $2,327 worth of damage.
McDonald was charged on July 7 with first-degree criminal property damage, endangerment of a child, criminal vehicular operation, and reckless driving.
