FALLS CREEK, Pa. — A parent here has created a petition asking a school district to install cameras that face the road or cameras on the stop arms of school buses.
Kristy Baughman started the petition on Change.org to encourage the DuBois Area School District to install cameras that would help law enforcement identify and prosecute motorists who illegally pass stopped school buses. The petition states that the cameras would also act as a deterrent to prevent other drivers from committing similar offenses.
Randy Schmidt, the transportation director for the district, told WJAC that the district’s buses currently only have cameras inside the bus to monitor students on board. Schmidt added that while he supports the use of cameras outside the bus, the cost of the cameras remains an issue.
Baughman states in the petition, which currently has more than 400 signatures, that student safety should be a "top priority," and that the district should take the appropriate action to implement the cameras on all of its buses. Baughman plans to present the petition to the DuBois Area School Board at their next meeting in December, WJAC reports.
