TRENTON, N.J. — State legislators are considering a bill aimed at increasing the safety of special-needs passengers on school buses.
If enacted, the bill would require school districts and contractors to equip their special-needs buses with video cameras to monitor students. The law would apply to special-needs buses purchased on or after the bill's effective date as well as those already in operation.
The legislation also stipulates that school districts and contractors would receive reimbursement from the Department of Education for retrofits; they could apply for reimbursement by completing an application form and presenting a receipt for their purchase of the cameras.
The bill would become effective 180 days after its enactment.
