BUFFALO, N.Y. — A motorist here passed a school bus with its lights flashing and struck a 6-year-old girl on Wednesday morning, WGRZ reports.
Rosemary Marquinez told the news source that while she was waiting across the street for her grandson’s bus to arrive, she saw the motorist drive past the school bus and run into the girl, who was waiting for the bus and about to walk into the street. She added that she crossed the street to see if the girl was OK, and the girl’s father was hugging her and asking if she was OK.
The girl was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and First Student told the news source the girl was released and is OK.
Police said the driver was issued a ticket for passing a school bus illegally, according to WGRZ. In response to the incident, state Sen. Tim Kennedy said “the law needs to deal with this serious offense in a very strong way,” the news source reports. Kennedy and other state lawmakers have proposed legislation to stiffen penalties for illegally passing school buses.
