NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A motorist here who allegedly struck a school bus had just been involved in a hit-and-run accident, and was charged with a DUI.

On Tuesday, Newport News police, medics and the fire department responded to a call of a traffic crash involving a Newport News city school bus and a red Toyota. The motorist failed to stop for a red traffic signal and struck the bus, according to a news release from the police department. There were no students and no reported injuries on the bus.

Michelle Price, director of public information and community relations for Newport News Public Schools, told WAVY that a driver trainee and instructor were aboard the bus at the time.

While the officer was investigating the incident, it was reported that the same suspect vehicle had previously been involved in a separate crash and had left the scene.

The driver was identified as 37-year-old Angela Hope Charles. Charles was subsequently charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident from the first incident. She was also charged with DUI second offense, refusal to take blood/breath test, driving while suspended third or subsequent, reckless driving, and possession of Schedule IV narcotics.

Charles was taken to a hospital with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing.
