ADA, Minn. — A fed-up county prosecutor here is going beyond issuing fines to motorists who don’t stop for stopped school buses; he is putting them in jail, KFGO reports.
Since the start of the school year, Norman County Attorney James Brue has given two people jail time over a weekend, and fined them $285, according to the news source. Brue told KFGO that although schools have made a significant effort over the last few years to educate the public on stopping for school buses with their stop arms extended, “it just doesn’t seem to be working” and that violations “haven’t seemed to decrease year-to-year.”
Brue added that he has worked closely with the transportation director for Ada-Borup Public Schools to try to raise awareness, according to the news source.
Additionally, the state raised its fines for illegally passing a school bus from $300 to $500 in August.
