Indianapolis Public Schools’ new school buses will be equipped with three-point seat belts and propane engines, the district announced recently.
The board of school commissioners voted to approve the acquisition of the 100 new buses in a work session on April 19.
The new buses, which will roll out for the next school year, will also include onboard video surveillance systems and GPS tracking capability.
The vehicles will be acquired over the course of a five-year lease, with maintenance costs during the lease term covered by the vendor.
“These new buses will allow our transportation team to replace aging buses from our fleet to improve safety and to increase the efficiency of our operations,” the district said in a statement.
Indianapolis Public Schools transports about 28,000 students daily on 410 routes, two-thirds of which are contracted out.
The addition of the seat belts to the new buses will allow the district to transport some of its youngest scholars — pre-K students — who couldn’t previously ride the school bus.
School bus drivers and monitors in New York joined Teamsters, while others in Alaska and Ontario face ongoing strikes over wages and contracts.
