NEW YORK — An alleged burglar fleeing from police in a stolen SUV slammed into a special-needs school bus, injuring eight students, the bus driver and the aide.
Police officers and bystanders climbed atop the overturned bus and pulled out some of the students. Rescuers then pried open the rear emergency exit to evacuate the rest of the passengers.
Authorities said that the children were wearing seat belts.
After the crash, the burglary suspect fled on foot until he was caught by police.
The bus occupants were taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.
