Employees at school bus contractor Durham School Services, which has an Adopt-a-School program, were recently recognized for their contributions in Stratford, Conn.

Officials said that four drivers — Marie Tillson, Suzanne Swayze, Beatriz Derubis and Sheila Dawson — have each been volunteering two hours a week to assist students and faculty at Second Hill Lane Elementary School. These individuals received certificates of appreciation last month from Principal James Noga.

“Supporting the community is something that we strongly believe in,” said Pamela Capuano, who runs Durham’s school bus facility in Stratford. “There are countless ways our employees get involved, and helping our local schools is one of them.”

Durham’s Adopt‐a‐School program calls for employees to donate personal time to enrich the school experience for children across the U.S. Their contributions range from spending time reading to younger kids to helping with homework or a class project to assisting with a school event.

“The time our employees have spent volunteering at schools is definitely appreciated by students and staff, and it’s great to get that positive feedback from the school administration,” Capuano said. “It’s a program we know is meaningful to the community, and we’ll continue to do it.”
