WAUZEKA, Wis. — Longtime Wauzeka-Steuben School District bus driver Bob Welsh steered his bus to a safe stop last week after it malfunctioned while he was transporting students home, The Boscobel Dial reports.

First the radio shut off unexpectedly as the bus was going down a steep and winding hill. Then Welsh noticed that all of the bus’ lights were off and the engine had stopped working. The newspaper reports that Welsh stood on the brake in an attempt to stop the bus; when that didn’t work, he tried the emergency brake, which worked for a short time.  

The bus picked up speed as the emergency brake faded and the bus continued its decent on the hill, so he steered the bus to the right and into a ditch that was covered by a wall of snow. After the bus came to rest, three boys who lived nearby phoned the bus garage from home, as they had no cell phone service.
