WINNIPEG, Manitoba — A bus driver for a rural school district here picked up approximately 20 students on his route while he had a gun with him in the bus. The students alerted school officials to the situation, and the driver is now facing firearms charges.

Sgt. Line Karpish, a spokeperson for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, did not specify whether the gun was loaded at the time of the incident. Police arrested the driver at his home and seized several firearms, CBC News reports.

Ray Derksen, chief superintendent of the Frontier School Division, told the news source that the driver was a fill-in employee who had not received a background check. He had been operating school buses on an as-needed basis for several years.

A note was sent home to parents informing them of the incident. Parents of children who were on the bus at the time of the incident were contacted immediately.
