DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. — A local man faces numerous charges after a wild ride that included crashing into a school bus and fleeing the scene on foot, authorities said.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff, a deputy saw a Ford Focus speeding — at an estimated 70 mph in a 45 mph highway construction zone — on the afternoon of Feb. 3. The deputy activated his lights and siren to turn around and stop the car. The deputy saw the car traveling into the oncoming lane of traffic but then lost sight of it.

The car reportedly drove through a red light and was struck by an SUV that was moving through the intersection. The car then traveled over a median and struck a Douglas County School District bus, which was in a left turn lane. Police said that there were no students on the bus at the time.

After hitting the bus, the car driver fled on foot across the highway and onto another road. According to police, he attempted to enter several vehicles at a stoplight.

The suspect was able to enter a car through the rear door, but the driver of the car put the suspect in a headlock. Two witnesses came over to help, and the suspect was detained until deputies arrived soon afterward.

The Douglas County Sheriff identified the suspect as Roger Levito Trujillo, 34. He was booked on more than a dozen counts of various charges, including reckless driving, aggravated motor vehicle theft, vehicular eluding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.
