WETHERSFIELD, Conn. — Chinese government traffic security officials visited the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) last week to learn about the state’s school bus safety program and discuss student transportation safety issues.

DMV Sgt. Garfield Green (the state pupil transportation director) and DMV Inspector Doug Lecco exchanged school bus safety information with Xuhe Ye, deputy director of the Traffic Division of Public Security for the Fujian province in China. Green and Lecco covered a wide range of DMV activities to promote the safe travel of buses and other vehicles that carry students to and from school.

“These types of meetings are always helpful to showcase to other safety officials what we’re doing to make sure students get to their classroom safely each day,” DMV Commissioner Melody Currey said.

During the meeting, DMV staff performed a complete school bus inspection, reviewed how the agency audits paperwork of individual student transportation companies and outlined other safety responsibilities.

Ye is studying highway traffic management, accident prevention and investigation, and law enforcement through an internship with the Connecticut State Police and a training project with the University of New Haven.
