China's State Council approved long-awaited school bus safety regulations on Tuesday, following several fatal crashes in recent months involving "modified and sometimes overcrowded" school buses, China Daily reports.
The regulations, which go into effect immediately, give buses priority in traffic congestion and require companies and drivers to acquire licenses to offer school transportation services. Other drivers are barred from overtaking a bus when students are boarding or disembarking, and school buses must operate on routes mapped out by authorities.
