SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is thanking the state’s school bus drivers this Tuesday for their commitment to safely transporting children to and from school, and the agency is encouraging others to do so as well. 

Each year, the State Assembly recognizes the invaluable service provided by school bus drivers throughout California, and this year it has designated the fourth Tuesday in April as “School Bus Driver Day.”

“School bus drivers are unsung heroes who are entrusted with the safety of our children on a daily basis,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. “Please be sure to thank these individuals if you or your child benefits from their services.”

The CHP provides initial school bus driver training and also stringently tests all drivers on bus driving skills, equipment and the mechanical aspects of their buses. California bus drivers must also maintain educational requirements about current licensing, skills and knowledge.

The CHP went on to say that the state’s school bus drivers are credited with thousands of accident-free miles every year and consistently demonstrate patience and kindness toward students, parents and school staff while performing their duties.

In related news, on Monday at the state’s Capitol, Sen. Tom Harman presented a resolution from the California State Senate recognizing all school bus drivers for their continued and excellent services to the youth of the state. Harman highlighted bus drivers’ many achievements and extended to them special recognition from the public.

The resolution also commends the California Association for School Transportation Officials for its dedication and contributions to the people of California by promoting safe pupil transportation while upholding high standards for California school bus drivers. The resolution recognizes April 27, 2010, as School Bus Driver's Day.
