RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. — A 10-year-old boy has been recognized by law enforcement officials in San Bernardino County for his efforts to improve safety at his school bus stop, KABC reports.

Sterling Vieau noticed that many cars and trucks were not stopping at the intersection where his bus stop is located, so he conducted a survey with his mother. He told the news outlet that they went to the stop at different times during the day for 15 minutes, and they would tally which cars stopped and which did not. Vieau found that 67% of the vehicles didn’t stop, despite posted signs, San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon told the news outlet. (The boy took his findings to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department upon completion of the survey.)

Last week, Vieau was recognized for his efforts to improve safety at his school bus stop with a certificate from the sheriff’s department, which was presented to him at school by McMahon and other sheriff’s department officials.  

Deputies also handed out a number of citations to motorists who failed to stop at the intersection.
