Tenn. bill would let bus drivers use force

The state House passes legislation that would authorize school bus drivers to hold students accountable for disorderly conduct. Bus drivers and other school personnel could use “reasonable force when necessary … to correct or restrain a student or prevent bodily harm or death to another person.”

School Bus First Observer has instructed tens of thousands of drivers and other pupil transportation personnel on identifying and reporting suspicious activities. Program Manager Charles Hall says that the industry has “much to be proud of.”

Student Transportation awarded 2 new contracts

Officials for the company and its subsidiary Student Transportation of Canada Inc. say the contracts, which are each for five years, will add approximately 200 vehicles, $9 million Canadian in revenue on an annualized basis and include fuel price mitigation clauses.

Illinois Central School Bus subsidiary Missouri Central School Bus is serving the Voluntary Interdistrict Choice Corp. in St. Louis under a three-year contract. The Missouri State Patrol recently inspects the fleet and officials say it exceeds the state’s excellence standard, with no buses out of service.

In the American Association of School Administrators’ new survey, respondents project new budget cuts in the 2013-14 school year, though the cuts may not be as deep as in the earlier years of the recession. About two-thirds of school districts surveyed eliminated positions in 2011-12.
