Hawaii takes on transportation budget shortfall
State lawmakers set aside 38% less than the requested $42 million for school transportation for the upcoming school year. The state Board of Education Finance and Infrastructure Committee meets to discuss options to address the shortfall, including reducing bus service.
HONOLULU — The Hawaii State Board of Education Finance and Infrastructure Committee was briefed Tuesday on ways to address a $16 million shortfall for student transportation for the upcoming school year, KITV.com reports.
State lawmakers set aside 38% less than the requested $42 million for school transportation for the upcoming school year. Possible approaches to the issue include reducing costs, increasing revenues or reducing bus service.
Department of Education officials said they would not agree to raise the $260 fee parents pay annually for school bus service, according to Assistant Schools Superintendent Randy Moore. Board Chairman Don Horner told the news source he is opposed to the cancellation of bus routes that service elementary schools.
