District launches Very Important Passenger program

Newport-Mesa Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Fred Navarro was the inaugural passenger in the California operation’s program, which launched on Wednesday with Navarro watching a driver perform a pre-trip inspection and then accompanying him on a morning route. Director of Transportation Pete Meslin tells SBF that the intent of the program is to bring attention to the important role school bus transportation plays in students’ lives.

Zach D’Souza, 15, and his father, Henry D’Souza, repair Buster the School Bus for Poway (Calif.) Unified School District. The bus is more than a dozen years old and has not been used for the last several years because it was broken.

School buses loaded with supplies for tornado victims

Student transportation provider Durham School Services is collecting emergency supplies for the victims of the devastating storm in Oklahoma. Students from Guthrie, Okla., have also brought a school bus stocked with supplies to Moore, which was hit by a tornado that was more than a mile wide.

Texas district’s transportation services honored for sustainability

The Houston Independent School District wins the National Association of Fleet Administrators Excellence in Public Fleet Sustainability award for 2013. The district is recognized for its use of alternative fuels and partnership with the University of Houston to test a school bus filter that will convert smog-producing pollutants emitted from engines into water and nitrogen gas.
