School bus driver inspires struggling student to graduate
High schooler Destynee Duncan was ready to quit during state testing. School bus driver Ken Boisvert told Duncan about his own difficulties as a student and encouraged her to stick with it. She went on to graduate — and invited her driver to attend the ceremony.
KINGSTON, N.Y. — A high school student who was ready to quit during state testing got a crucial boost from her school bus driver, the Daily Freeman reports.
After her first day of Regents Examinations — New York's statewide standardized exams in core high school subjects — Destynee Duncan boarded Ken Boisvert's bus and said that she wasn't going back for the second day. "She was angry; she hadn't done well," Boisvert told the news outlet. "She was going to quit."
Boisvert, a driver for Ethan Allen Transportation, told his passenger about his own struggles when he was a student, and he stressed the importance of getting a high school diploma. "I said, 'You don't have a shot if you don't graduate. So I told her about myself. ... And I said, 'You can do it, too.'"
Duncan returned for the next day of Regents testing, and she went on to graduate, inviting Boisvert to attend the ceremony. Boisvert and Duncan tell their story in this video from the Daily Freeman:
