In harsh cold, school buses serve as warming stations

With temperatures hovering in the single digits on Thursday, Nashville residents who needed a break from the bitter cold could climb aboard a "Mobile Warming Station" — also known as a yellow school bus. The city's Office of Emergency Management partnered with Metro Nashville Public Schools for the innovative program.

Former mechanic creates bus safety lighting system

Steve Gardner invented the Gardian Angel, a system for use on school buses that creates a path of light for students to walk in after the bus driver stops and opens the door. His invention was prompted by news of an accident in which a girl was crossing the street to board her bus and was struck and killed.

Georgia districts to share buses for field trips

Under the agreement, students from Cobb County School District could be transported to and from events with Marietta City Schools students and vice versa, with each district paying the other up front for the use of their buses. The transportation director for Marietta says that when the districts have shared services in the past, it has saved $100 to $500 depending on the trip.

Bill would remove school bus age limit in Tennessee

The bill would prohibit the state from limiting the use of Type C and Type D school buses by years of service or by miles driven — as long as the buses are inspected at least once each school year and are deemed safe.
