NYAPT works to bolster school bus security

On Wednesday, the one-year anniversary of the slaying of Alabama school bus driver Charles Poland Jr., the New York Association for Pupil Transportation paid tribute to Poland and announced steps it is taking to increase school bus security. For example, the association is supporting legislation that would make it a crime of criminal trespass to board a school bus without permission.

Snowstorm leaves students stranded overnight

Thousands of students in the Atlanta area spent Tuesday night at school or, in some cases, even on buses because of a winter storm that froze up traffic. The National Guard came to the aid of some 95 stranded school buses, delivering food and water to the students and getting the buses moving. "We had cleared them all by [Wednesday] morning, and that was a big task," Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal says.

District revamps transportation, reduces late buses by 97%

Tennessee’s Metro Nashville Public Schools restructured the department last fall, and officials say the number of late morning buses has decreased 69% since Oct. 1, and the number of late afternoon buses has decreased 28%. Customer service and turnaround time on bus repairs have also improved.

Interchangeability 2014, to be held June 15-18 in Buckinghamshire, England, is designed to bring together school transportation professionals from around the world to share ideas and best practices. The conference is the creation of transportation veterans Sian Thornthwaite and Kirsti Robinson.

District calls for student-designed school bus ads

The ads for Granite School District buses must highlight either a program offered by the district, online courses or a “help wanted” ad for bus drivers. Steven Powell, publications specialist for the Salt Lake City-based district, says officials felt that ads on buses created by students would be a good opportunity to showcase some of the programs available.

IC Bus now delivering CE units with Cummins engine

The first CE Series school buses equipped with the Cummins ISB 6.7-liter engine are released from IC Bus’ Tulsa, Okla., assembly plant. The OEM says that, to date, it has received more than 2,000 orders for CE buses with the Cummins engine.

2 dismissed after disabled student left on bus

Missouri officials say that a school bus driver and an aide left a nonverbal 19-year-old in her wheelchair on the bus and then found her at the end of the school day. School staff gave the student fluids and checked her vital signs before taking her home.
